Fresh Pick of the Week from the Certified Farmers' Markets

Certified Farmers Market Fresh Pick of the Week: Heirloom Tomatoes!

Heirloom Tomatoes are this week’s Fresh Pick of the Week from the Summer Certified Farmers’ Market. Although the low desert’s tomato season is pretty much over, local farmers from higher elevations are still sharing this year’s bumper drop of Heirloom Tomatoes with those of us in the Coachella Valley. Available in a variety of colors, shapes, textures and sizes, Heirloom Tomatoes  continue to grow in popularity with home cooks and chefs alike because they are delicious, and visually appealing – traits that many of their hybrid cousins, bred for transportability and uniformity, have lost. A few varieties of Heirloom Tomatoes can now be found in groceries, but because they have a very short shelf life, the local farmers’ market is still the best place to buy them.

DID YOU KNOW: There are literally hundreds of varieties of Heirloom Tomatoes. In fact, one catalog which is devoted entirely to Heirloom Tomato seeds offers over 600 different varieties of seeds!

Price: Varies by variety, but generally $3 per pound and up

Also in Season, and available now at all locations: Potatoes, Celery, Green Onions, FRESH and DRIED Herbs, Eggs, Dates, Almonds, Oranges, Grapefruit, Chard, Eggplant, Squash, Onions, Garlic, Apples, Shallots, Beets, Green Beans, Carrots, Tomatoes, Green Tomatoes, Peppers, Lettuces, Parsley, Mint, Broccoli, Cabbage, Spinach, Radishes, Leeks,  Brussels Sprouts, Asparagus, Cherimoyas, Dates . . . . PLUS, incredible artisan breads, fresh meats, cheese, fresh raw honey, California olives/olive oil/vinegars, and a wide variety of exotic Orchids and flowers.
